Depression Remedies Found At Home – January 24th, 2010

It might sound unusual to say that you can find over-the-counter and natural depression remedies. Our society these days promotes medicine over everything, with natural therapeutics now dismissed as the far-fetched solution to mental and medical issues. For a long time, the natural solutions were the only ones available and have been used by societies around the world and throughout history.

There are a few established and true depression remedies that you can try first, before speaking to a physician or pharmacist. One easy and proven remedy is to physical activity. Moving and sweating lets your body free endorphins, which can boost your mood. It’s a natural solution that has minimal costs. There is also an added benefit of satisfying goals, stretching yourself mentally and physically, and being outside or socializing at the gym.

Another depression remedies is finding unique relaxation methods to release tension. Aromatherapy is a long-used remedy to cure clinical depression. Smelling salts and herbal sachets were once used to help cure “spells.” They carried certain herbs with proven medicinal values, with scents that release the stressors from the body. Yoga is a great way to both free endorphins and relax. There is a meditation aspect to most yoga classes, wherein you release after class and lay prone. There are other meditation techniques that work as well, including deep respiration techniques.

What you consume can also help – or hurt – your mood. Avoiding alcohol and drugs is critical, as they can act as depressants. Eating healthy food, taking vitamins and drinking water will make you feel better about yourself, and elevate your temper. Avoiding sugar and cutting carbs can also help reduce relief in some of the symptoms of depression. Some of these things, especially sugar and alcohol, give part-time relief to feelings of depression but can exacerbate the symptoms over the long-term.
